Ngai Pākehā
Board Member
Ascia has worked in the performing arts industry for over 15 years. A 2001 graduate of Unitec Performing arts school Ascia performs as an actor but is primarily an actors agent, being one of the associates of Kathryn Rawlings & Associates. Recently she took a year off to study Te Reo Māori & Te Ao Māori at Te Wānanga o Takiura – which she says was the single most challenging & rewarding step of her life to date. She believes in finding a path towards inclusivity in our industry. She knows many actors feel they are on the ‘outside’ trying to ‘break into’ the elusive Theatre or Film & Television world. This motivates her to ensure the sector takes care of & supports one another. She comments “this is what it means to work under tikanga Maori. To uplift the mana of others – Manaakitangi”. Ascia is a founding board member.

Tainui Tukiwaho is an experienced theatre maker having worked professionally in te ao whakaari for the past 20 years. He began his career as an actor after graduating from Unitec. Using this skill as a foundation for storytelling, he progressed to directing and writing where – over the past 10 years – he has built a sizable resume. Tainui observed a lack of Māori voices on our professional stages and quickly adopted and implemented a distinctive style and perspective representative of his cultural background. With this voice he has written, adapted and translated many plays, including Peter, Paka, Paratene, E kore a muri e hokia, Hoki Mai, Tama ma, Larger than life, Te Awarua and more recently the international sell-out festival show Black Ties

Creativity has always surrounded me as both sides of my whakapapa boast writers, composers, visual artists, handicraft artists, weavers and dreamers. I’m a kaihaka for Te Rōpū Manutaki and also play a part in the organisational side of things for our kapa.

I am new to the toi whakaari world and am excited to embark on this journey at Te Pou under the He Kai Kei Aku Ringa Programme. In the past I have worked in admin, advisor, coordinator and project based roles. Two relevant pieces of work that I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of include helping to provide some coordination and support to a community based play called People and Things to celebrate World Smokefree May 2021, which was written by Maree Webster. Most recently I was also able to provide coordination across Auckland Council entities to support Te Matatini Herenga Waka Herenga Tangata 2023.

I have much to learn and heaps of space to grow and I’m super happy that I can do so here at Te Pou.

Keira returned to Tāmaki in 2016, ready to get back into live events. With a varied background in the industry Keira has been a Roadie, a Lighting Tech, a Stage Manager and a Venue Technician in venues and on shows all over Aotearoa. In her spare time, Keira likes to get outdoors; whether that be long bush walks with her dog Hades (aka “The Waitakere Wanderer”), sailing on the Waitematā, or planning and making elaborate decorations and costumes for her favourite holiday; Halloween!

Outside of mahi I have always been involved in the arts from Dance to Musical Theatre and lately dabbling in visual art. Earlier this year I studied Te Whainga O Te Ao Tikanga at Te Wānanga Ō Aotearoa and next year will be studying Te Ara Reo Māori as well as continuing my journey back to my roots in honour of my tīpuna who I credit for guiding me through life. Whakapapa | Our story

The whakapapa of Te Pou Theatre starts with our tūpuna and taonga they have passed down to us, the political movements and work of the leaders in Māori arts over the last six decades and the path they have laid for us to be able to do the mahi we do. Te Pou Theatre was named in 2015 in a collective national process where Māori artists from around the motu put forward name options which were decided on by kaumātua in the industry.  Te Pou stands as a support post for Māori performing arts in Aotearoa.

Portage Road | 2015 - 2018

In December 2014 our Auckland Māori arts community came together to discuss what we need to grow and strengthen our industry. The need for our own theatre space, a whare, was voiced strongly. The karanga was heard and answered – we were extremely excited to announce that as of the 1st of March 2015, the lease was signed on the building at 44a Portage road New Lynn. Renovations commenced with a dedicated team of volunteers working day and night to create a whare we could all be proud of. On April 11, we held the official opening for TE POU- The Auckland home of Māori theatre’. Te mutunga kē mai o te mīharo!

Corban Estate Arts Centre | 2018 - 2019

In July 2018 Te Pou moved to Corban Estate Arts Centre to create a new Māori home for theatre in the historic Shed 1 which has held decades of artists work. Over this time Te Pou planned an ambitious build and fit out that would create a fit for purpose kaupapa Māori home from performing arts. While planning the build of new Te Pou, “Te Pou Hou” we were busy delivering our development programme Whakapuawai Programme and Kōanga Festival while being an affordable rehearsal and performance venue for many different arts and community groups.

Corban Estate Arts Centre | 2020 - 2022

In partnership with Corban Estate Trust we fundraised and gathered support from Ngā Mātārae (formerly He Waka Anga Mua Ki Uta, Auckland Council) to develop the feasibility study and designs from the wonderful Graeme Burgess and the team at Burgess & Treep from there we gathered support from Foundation North, Lotteries & The Trusts Community Foundation. With the incredible team at Chain Construction led by James Delaney we began construction of the new Te Pou in 2020. We opened our new theatre venue with productions in early 2021 from artists including Rawiri Paratene, Nicola Kāwana and Tainui Tukiwaho. We’ve supported the community with online arts experiences over Covid-19 lockdowns and continue to build the theatre into 2023.
