Te Pou was established in 2015 as a response to the Māori Theatre sector’s desire to have a home for their work and for the development of the sector. Through all of your support Te Pou has developed to hold a significant place in the Auckland performing arts landscape, as the only professional theatre venue in West Auckland, a place where tikanga Māori led arts management is practised and where the arts and artists can develop and present their work under this kaupapa.
We are excited to embark on this new journey, creating a more permanent and fit for purpose home through partnering with Corban Estate and joining the amazing arts organisations such as The Pacifica Arts Centre, Atāmira Dance Company, Red Leap Theatre, Mixit, Crescendo Trust, Westside Tales Youth Theatre and the individual artists. So see you later basketball noise, dodgy carpark and tap dancing overhead! In 2019 we have grand plans to create new theatre space working in relationship with the companies that call Corban estate home.
We’ll be keeping you all posted on the progress. In the meantime, our 2018 Kōanga Festival will be occupying Corbans Estate with Māori playwright development projects and community events and you’ll find us holding workshops throughout the remainder of the year out of The Cellar Theatre there.
