A New Kāinga for Māori Theatre

Our Build Story.
In 2020 in partnership with Corban Estate Arts Centre we have embarked on a build to create a performing arts centre with two auditoriums, offices, hui rooms and facilities to service audiences and performing artists.

We opened briefly in 2021 and welcomed over 10,000 people through the doors over 6 short events.

In January 2023 we opened the newly built whare whakaari with a whakatō mauri led by manawhenua and attended by hundreds of our supporters.

We are now open with shows, events, workshops and are taking bookings for our spaces. Nau mai haere mai!

Stage One

Completed in 2020 we constructed a 750 square metre black box theatre auditorium.  Designed for 250 seats this flexi form space  has had insulation and acoustically-sound walls installed, air conditioning and a lighting rig.

Stage Two

We have built a 145m2 studio suitable for rehearsals and public performances (audience capacity of 90).  We have built office and hui rooms for our team, manuhiri and community use, and we have build a technical storage and working space backstage.

New Box Bar

Stage Three

In 2022 – 2023 we built the front of house – creating a light filled, insulated foyer, box office and bar, and other amenities for our patrons.  We also built the back of house, installing dressing rooms for our performers and sound proofing this area.  We are further improving our foyer and outdoor signage, the theatre auditorium with flexible seating rostra, lighting rig and power supply.

Support our Build

Building a theatre is a massive financial endeavour. We still have many areas of the whare we are developing to be fully fit-for-purpose. We want to offer quality and build a sustainable future for Māori Theatre. Donate now to help us achieve our vision.
